If ranking the best retirement states were based on beauty, then Colorado would be a top 5 state, but as it is, it’s at the bottom of our list. All that beauty comes at a cost apparently, with a state income tax, not many social security exemptions, cold winters, expensive real estate and high crime, Colorado doesn’t check any of our retirement boxes, except maybe health care (at 13th overall).   Still, the draw of the majestic outdoors might be worth ignoring if you want to retire to Colorado.

If you’re planning to retire to Colorado, we’re guessing it’s because you love the outdoors and can afford to, in which case you’ll enjoy one of the most beautiful states in the country with things to do all year around.  Mountains, lakes, deserts, the only thing missing is an ocean in terms of biomes. However, for most retirees on a fixed budget, Colorado’s beauty might only be for vacation. If you do end up in Colorado, you’ll find that the income tax isn’t oppressive (4.63%)  and the health care system is one of the best in the country.  While the real estate is expensive in relation to the rest of the country, the real estate taxes are some of the lowest in the nation.  In addition, the state has multiple metropolitan cities with suburbs to choose from and even some small towns strewn out in between.

What To Consider Before Retiring To Colorado

Colorado has some of the highest prices in real estate, very cold winters, and unexpectedly high crime. Add on to that a lower than average retirement population and a general lack of affordability and it’s no wonder why Colorado is so low on our list.   It could also be dangerous, as much of the wildlife might have you are part of their menu options.    We kid… partially.   Also, due to the altitude it, living in Colorado might be detrimental to your health.
